Episode 62 – Preventing Child Abuse

What happens when you pick up the phone to report child abuse? In honor of Child Abuse Prevention Month, we discuss the process of recognizing and reporting child abuse and neglect. Topics covered include: what to look for, children left home alone, mandated reporters, and the difference between physical, sexual, and emotional abuse.

We refer to an online information packet at Child Welfare Information Gateway. Order a free Child Abuse Prevention Manual from Olive Crest. Save the phone number for the child abuse reporting line for your state.

  1. Not really a comment on this episode (which I enjoyed), but I’m not sure if you know that this podcast has been added to CleanCasts at http://cleancasts.com/in.php?id=66.

I really enjoy this podcast and hope you both continue it well into the future. Best wishes for your family!

  2. It’s REALLY important when talking about bruises to discuss Mongolian Spots. Most white people – and many people of color – don’t know about them, and it’s VERY easy to think they are bruises from abuse, since they fall into the “bruises between the neck and bottom” range. They look exactly like bruises and they are most common among children of color.
