Episode 89 – Kids in Residential Treatment Centers

W interviews Rich Bobby, a social worker specializing in kids in residential treatment centers.  They discus the differences between juvenile hall, group homes and residential treatment.  This episode will help you discern if you’re prepared to help a child transition from residential treatment to a family.  Also some great advice that can help you parent any child.

  1. Wonderful podcast! It was packed with information and I loved the end when he thanked you. Sometime that is all it takes to make a foster parent feel better.

  2. Thank you for this. It was timely. My husband has recently told me that he is not ready to foster at this point in our lives. He isn’t ruling it out completely, but he wants to wait until our son (who just turned one) is a little older. My heart is grieved, as we had already started the classes and I’ve been “nesting” like crazy, but I know that we can’t be good parents to foster children until we are both 100% on board.

Anyway, I say all that to say that yesterday I decided to apply for a job in a residential treatment center. I wasn’t sure if it was the right step for me (and I’m still praying about it) but this podcast helped clear up some questions I had about RTCs in general, as well as the kids who live in them. I appreciate all of the podcasts you have done, and the way you research and interview for our benefit! Thank you for what you do.

  3. I wonder what happens to the kids when they leave the structured residential programs. What percentage of them end up homeless, in jail or as “successful” adults?

    Really sad.

  4. Great podcast. I am a new foster parent and have just received a residential placement. Our family is working on the transition from the residential treatment facility into our home. In Ohio, there is a very short pre-placement process so after two visits she was placed with us. This episode provided multiple tips that I plan to use to help her adjust to our home after being in residential.

I have been listening to your podcast for a few months now and wanted to say that I admire how you two extensively research a subject beyond what you learn in the state/agency provided classes and then present that information to your listeners. This podcast has provided so much helpful information and I recommend it to all foster parents I come into contact with. THANK YOU!
